Q: I have a car, but I can no longer drive. My caretaker and a couple of my kids drive me in my car, and they all have their car insurance. Do I need to keep paying for auto insurance?
A: Although there are some exceptions, as long as you own a vehicle that is required to be registered in Florida, you must carry a minimum of $10,000 each of personal injury protection and property damage liability insurance. This is true regardless of whether your caretaker and kids have their own car insurance.
In addition, you can be held responsible for any injuries or damages caused by those who drive your car with your permission. Although not required by law, you would be wise to carry bodily injury liability insurance. You may also want to consider carrying uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. That's in the event you or others in your vehicle are injured in an accident caused by another driver who does not carry bodily injury liability insurance.
You should consult with an insurance agent to make sure you have the required coverage, and to decide if additional coverage is warranted.
The absolute best way to save money on your auto insurance policy is to compare the different quotes that you will get from the auto insurance comparison web site you used while shopping for automobile insurance. If you have never used one of these before then you are in for a treat.
